OfficeMax 2025 Sustainability Strategy

Sustainability is part of the overall vision at OfficeMax and has been integrated throughout our business strategy to help deliver our vision to 'Empower sustainable and successful workplaces'.

This strategy demonstrates our commitment to helping New Zealand reach its potential over the long term. It establishes a framework for our core focus areas, goals and targets to help us achieve our three aspirational strategic goals.

Environmental Management

ISO 14001
OfficeMax has been certified to this international standard since 2011. This standard provides a framework for how effective environmental management systems (EMS) can be integrated into all aspects of a business. OfficeMax has committed to this standard to reduce the environmental impact of operating across our head office, distribution centres and showrooms in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

GHG emissions management
OfficeMax has measured its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions aligned with this standard since 2016. OfficeMax has completed third-party verification of our 2022 and 2023 GHG emissions inventories in line with ISO 140604-3. OfficeMax is committed to verifying future GHG inventories against this standard to provide our stakeholders with confidence in our GHG emissions claims.

Product certifications

Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
OfficeMax holds Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification. The FSC is an international non-profit organization committed to responsible forest management through rigorous standard setting. This certification verifies that FSC-certified products that we sell have been sourced from environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and well-managed forests, controlled sources, or reclaimed materials.
Forest Stewardship Council Chain of Custody Certification

Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
OfficeMax holds the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Chain of Custody Certification. The PEFC is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through their certification programme. This certification verifies that the PEFC products that we sell contain forest-based material that originates from sustainably managed forests.
PEFC Certification

It is important for OfficeMax to have both FSC and PEFC Chain of Custody certifications to cover the foresting, processing and distribution of our FSC and PEFC forest-based products.

Carbon neutral paper
NoCO2 provides independent, third-party certification to OfficeMax’s carbon-neutral copy paper and New Future Opti copy paper. As part of the certification process, NoCO2 manages the carbon offset liabilities, carbon credits and lifecycle assessments as needed.

Toitu carbon compatible freight reports
OfficeMax provides customers with freight emissions reports that enable them to understand the GHG emissions associated with the freighting of the products they purchase from us and can be used in their ISO 14064-1:2018 GHG emissions inventory.
